about IAN NUSSEY

PSYCHOLOGIST B.Psych [Hons]

Ian Nussey (B.Psych (Hons); PhD Candidate (Griffith)) has been providing therapy and development processes for individuals, families, groups and organisations since 1990, in private practice and educational facilities.  I have also worked in leadership and management roles in large eco-tourism resorts and not-for profit organisations.  I have been full time in private psychological practice since February 2003.   I am a Psychologist, with General Registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Registration Board (no – PSY0000959820) and a member of the: Australian Psychological Society (MAPS); Australia New Zealand Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abuse (ANZATSA); Australian and New Zealand Society of Criminology (ANZSOC);  and Child Protection Practitioners Association of Queensland (CPPAQ) .

I work with children, adolescents and their families (carers), and care providers primarily in either youth justice or child protection contexts.  The focus of my practice is on assisting individual’s to develop their potential and create positive lives for themselves.  The specific issues I work with include: developmental trauma and attachment disorders; substance misuse; sexual abuse; problem/abusive sexual behaviours; areas of juvenile offending (including violent and sexual) and family reunifications after significant trauma (including abuse).

I utilise a strength/solution based approach in collaborative multi-systemic processes with the client in both complex case planning and direct support.  In my practice I utilise a variety of active and engaging experiential processes, with other evidence based psychological interventions.  This process is guided by a philosophy that individuals are able to grow and develop positive and pro-active self-beliefs, attitudes and behaviours.    Simply put, I work with client strengths and needs to break down barriers, fears and insecurities as they grow towards goals, aspirations and dreams.

I provide evidence based risk assessments for Child Protection and Youth Justice Departments in Queensland, New South Wales and have also done so for Victoria and Legal Aid Queensland.  I specialise in the provision of evidenced based and psychometrically supported forensic risk and psycho-social assessments and reports for: juvenile sexual, violent and property offending; family and individual assessments for child protection (emotional, physical and sexual abuse, and neglect) and more general youth offending.

Working with high/extreme needs individuals and complex cases have been a particular focus of my Child Protection, Youth Justice and family work.  In this area of my practice I work with either stakeholders/care teams or directly with families being re-unified or those engaged in an intensive family intervention.  These processes focus on increasing understanding within the family of risk and protective factors (dynamic and static), ‘trigger awareness’ and safety plans.  This work includes providing case supervision and planning with workers involved with the client (group).  In this role I may guide and provide supervision for the strategic case planning and implementation, while not necessarily providing direct client therapy/support.  I provide this service in person or via phone and skype.

I regularly provide ‘in organisation’ training/staff development on a consultancy basis for NGO’s for topics such as: child and adolescent development; problem/abusive sexual behaviour; development of delinquency and violence, substance misuse and suicide.  I have also provided for Child Protection regions in Queensland around Brisbane and Central Queensland workshops on sexual development, problem/abusive sexual behaviours, child and adolescent development and working therapeutically with young people in residential care.

I have experience working with both male and female clients from a diverse range of cultural and social backgrounds.  I have worked extensively with indigenous clients and care/health providers in Central and Far Northern Queensland with both Government Departments and NGO’s.

I enjoy working with this diverse range of clients in their own contexts and therefore do operate on an outreach basis for all services if required.  Services can also be offered remotely, via phone or video (such as skype) links.
